Iron concentrate – iron oxide – is converted into sponge iron (DRI) by removing oxygen from its structure through pelletizing and direct reduction. From there, steelmaking follows four broad stages: melting, refining, casting, and rolling.
In primary steelmaking, sponge iron and scrap steel are melted into raw steel using electric arc furnaces (EAF) or induction furnaces. In secondary steelmaking, undesirable elements are removed from the ladle and the chemical composition is fine-tuned. In the casting stage, molten steel is formed into ingots, billets, or slabs. Finally, the steel is rolled to its required thickness and shape, and its mechanical properties are refined.
Refractory linings are present at nearly every one of these stages – from the DRI reduction furnace, through the EAF and ladle, to the casting equipment – which is why lining selection needs to be matched to each specific stage rather than treated as one uniform spec.
